When Aurelia Caillard`s missionary father dies in a fire in Japan in the mid 19th century, Aurelia is adopted by the Shin family, masters of the Japanese tea ceremony. Slowly a Sapphic undercurrent begins to envelop Aurelia and the Shin daughter Yukako, one that must become repressed during Yukako`s unhappy marriage.
